Work. Or if you exercise, work out, or ride a bicycle, you’ll burn more calories in the gym or our riding than you will in the office.

What is your first thought – when you think of  “working” for a living?

Unfortunately, we’ve come to view anything connected with “working” for a living, as difficult, tedious, or tiring. Exercising, or playing, on the other hand, is called “exhilarating,” or “invigorating”. It’s a thrill to feel so tired!

That would suggest that the only difference between “work” which means going to a job, and “effort” which could mean having fun on a weekend, is all up to your attitude – how you think about, and what you feel about, the activity you’re “working” at.

The best way to define what is “not fun” work, and what is “fun” work, is this: One of them you have to do, and one of them you don’t.

And yet, not fun work is work you usually get paid to do, while fun work is usually something you pay to do. (For most people, it costs money to have fun.)

What all this means is that the fear of work stops many people from working their Amway business, and succeeding, because they mentally put building their Amway business in the not fun work category, instead of into the fun work category.

Don’t curtail your activities and new projects just because of criticism or gossip. Cool off, calm down, think it through and devise a clear strategy to get things back on track.

Find the person or persons who are the source of the unfounded information. Calmly confront the source of a rumor to counteract and control the damage. Because the tendency is to walk away from a conflict, it is often very disarming to be directly confronted by someone who has been wronged. Often the “rumor source” immediately apologizes and stops the flow of dishonest information. Although gossip cannot be entirely eliminated, we can learn to control it.

The couple had indicated to a number of their multi-level customers that the logo used by P & G represented a Satanic image. Actually it was a design that Procter & Gamble had created over a century ago and was not at all connected with the devil. Yet the rumor mill generated thousands of phone calls to Procter & Gamble by consumers who were concerned that their corporate profits were going to the devil.

Celebrating, or commiserating, with office staff or colleagues helps us gain perspective on both triumphs and disasters. Talking things over with others helps to humanize the work and the workplace. One of the biggest reasons that offices located in the home fail is simply because there is no one to talk to. Not being able to share exciting news, or get a pep talk when things are going badly, is a distinct disadvantage.

On the other hand, companies point to idle chatter and water cooler gossip as the worst offenders that contribute to unproductive time. Vicious gossip has often been the cause of ruined careers, and whole companies have deteriorated because of unfounded industry.

Sending a fax has more drama than a letter. If feels more like a hand-delivered telegram. You can also do it on your own time because with facsimile you don’t need the luxury of both people being available at the same moment.

To protect your information if anything  is of a confidential nature, don’t send a fax, unless it is a one-person office, or the person receiving the message will be right next to the machine. Fax is just like mail, but without the envelope.

Doing business in person provides us with a combination of physical, intellectual, and sensory clues. That’s why people fly thousands of miles for a one-hour meeting. Otherwise we would just trade videos, or rely solely on tele-conferencing. Cori Cutter, a Seattle salesperson, set out to convince a seasoned mortgage banker that the title insurance company she represented was worth taking a chance on. Although Cori was young, she had learned to listen intently, to validate information through effective body language, and to keep her answers brief and reassuring.

As the banker described the complex issues and his concerns, he stopped suddenly and said, “Can you handle all of this, Cori? There’s a lot of politics involved, a lot of egos, and frankly I’m not sure you have the experience to manage my accounts.”

Rather than getting defensive, rather than jumping in and acting overeager, or talking the issues to death, Cori stayed calm and friendly. She looked the older man squarely in the eye, and, after a brief pause, simply said, “No problem. I can handle it.”

If Cori had reviewed her excellent credentials or her experience at great length, she would have appeared defensive. Cori knew that the banker was aware of her background, and she read that what he was looking for was reassurance. Cori used six simple words, delivered with powerful body language, to give him what he wanted. She created assurance, established presence, and took charge.
