Treat Your Body Wisely
Many ailments are brought on by stupidity. There are people who literally maltreat their bodies. Some years ago a naval rating decided to ‘celebrate’ his birthday by drinking the rum ration of all his messmates. In the drunken torpor which followed, he turned in his hammock and suffocated himself in his pillow. The consequences of too much alcohol are not always so tragic, but they are generally undesirable. If you treat your body unwisely you can’t complain when it reacts unfavourably.
That fresh air is essential to life is a fact known by all. Yet many spend a lot of money and hours each day deliberately contaminating the air they breathe. The moral is obvious and reinforced by medical pronouncements on the relationship between lung cancer and smoking.
Some live to eat rather than eating to live. They stuff down large quantities of cell-clogging, fat-making food completely ignoring the findings of dietetics. People in no sense gluttons are convinced they should never rise from a meal unless they feel ‘full up’. This ill-becomes human beings; animals stuff themselves until they can take no more.
The general rule should be - give the body what it needs in the quantities it needs. Aim at a moderate, well-balanced diet. This will include adequate proteins, fruit, vegetables and water.
Take sufficient exercise – if your work doesn’t provide it – with respect to your age. If you are over forty, take life more leisurely. Take time – as the poet puts it – to stand and stare like sheep and cows. Keep a watchful eye for the myriad beauties of life. In this car-ridden age, beware of never walking anywhere. Walking remains the best form of mild exercise.
See you get sufficient sleep. Most people require seven or eight hours, though some do with less, especially as they get older. If you don’t sleep well, much in this book will help you. Meanwhile don’t worry about it. It’s not little sleep which harms you, but worry. Sleep comes easiest unsought. Cultivate indifference to it. Say to yourself: ‘It doesn’t matter if I don’t go to sleep. I’m resting, I’m comfortable and I’m enjoying this delicious quietness.’
