The Vital 20 % of Affiliates

February 23rd, 2009

It can well be that one single employee, associate or affiliate committed to customer service can make a huge difference in sales, profits and customer service levels.  The basic rule is that 80 % of anything is done by 20 %.  That is in this case 80 % sales of the sales, profits and customer service is usually done by 20 % of the employees ( or often just one solitary employee).

It might be said that the rest are just deadwood or just putting in time.  This is true.  However it may take some time and effort to determine which one or ones are that 20 %.  On top of that that one worker may be unassuming , be out of the limelight as they are working hard.   Or often the case it may be that others either are jealous or in the case of many assumed manager types – regard these highly productive people as threats both to their position and egos and will do everything to either mask and hide these results or even to have these highly productive individuals fired or demoted.

The interesting thing is that often these most productive types are loan wolves who prefer to work alone .  Sure teams and groups are fine – but not often for these groups.   The most highly productive employees workers, affiliates and associates may be highly social animals – and have the best respect , admiration and relationships with customers and clients yet they may not well fit into the company social activities , golf tournaments and the like.   They may even seem bored and uninterested at what may be considered by others as pep rally sales meetings.

In the end appreciate where your firm’s income and sales derive from – this smaller group.  Do your best to appreciate , support and not antagonize this group.  Those that try to may win the battle in their minds but lose the war.

Solve any and all Problems & Difficulties with Affiliates and Associates Immediately

February 22nd, 2009

It can be best said that customer service is that you are on their side , it is either the two of you together or not at all.   The two of you are on the same side – not adversaries or opponents.   If there is a complaint between you and any of your affiliates and associates it is incumbent on you to provide proof  and as well take immediate ownership of all issues and problems to solve.  If there is a problem at hand “take charge , take ownership”  and solve it.  Solve that problem.   You should want nothing better in life than to solve that problem or problem immediately , right on the spot.   As a result you , your affiliates and associates, as well as any one involved in any way , means or manner will be be much better off , yours and theirs positions will be enhanced.  Life will go on and develop for the better for all involved.  Simple as that.

What is In It for You ?

February 22nd, 2009

In your life you may come across phrases such as “What is in it for me ?” , “I don’t do anything in which there is not something for me ( emphasis may be added for the word me ),  “I don’t do anything unless i get my piece“,  “I don’t work for free”,  or simply put the anal retentive two year old “This is mine”  as in asking in a Mc Donald’s or a Salisbury house restaurant of a person if you could simply glance at his paper and his pointedly saying “This is mine” – as if were an arrogant two year old holding onto his toy with two hands tightly.

Nothing in life is “yours”.  You were put on this earth to help others , not for you to grab as much as you can.  Without others in life , you have little , and indeed will lead a very lonely existence.  The more you give to others ironically the more you will receive.   This is not the reason , in a self serving manner to help others , rather it is a truism of life.  To behave otherwise is not only foolish , and shortsighted,  it is downright foolish and evil.

Message of Personal Integrity

February 22nd, 2009

Recently I had lunch – a luncheon meeting appointment – with a friend and good business associate . When I had arrived at his place of work , his secretary , indicated that he would be detained momentarily. Twenty of so minutes later , my friend walked out into the office waiting reception area, then profusely apologized for keeping me waiting and then went on to explain and indicate this mother had stopped by the office to discuss a most personal and private matter at hand. He told me that he would be available for our lunch meeting , but that he would have to see and ensure that his mother had got and arrived home safely first.

Not wanting to lose the appointment meeting , I suggested that we could take her to her chosen destination on our way to lunch. He graciously and gratefully accepted. I next pulled my car to the front of the building walked to the passenger side , and opened the car door for my friend’s mother. I assisted her into her seat and pulled the seat belt around her because i noted that she had severe arthritis.

Interestingly my friend was on the phone to my boss and office , the next day expressing his gratitude- not for the lunch , or for dropping his mother off, but for the small gesture of helping her with her seat belt.

How could I have known that by reaching over and helping her with her seat belt that this would form a most lasting impression of who I was and what I was all abut ? In what i considered to be an unconscious act on my part, I had created a lasting impression of my personal honor , ethics and integrity and that sent a message that was much valued and acknowledged.
