Gold Bullion

Gold bullion: when you buy gold bullion, you are physically buying gold in the form of “bars”  that are 99.9 % pure gold.  You can actually take physical possession of the gold bars, or you can buy the gold through a broker that stores the gold .  Although you can theoretically buy as little as a single ounce of the gold precious metal as bullion, a minimum of 10 ounces is usually the standard minimum amount that is usually required.  A standard gold bar – the gold bar being the standard reference point  is generally 1 kg ( 2.2 lb weight) or stated in another measure 32.15 ounces.

When you buy gold bullion  a charge is made for casting and assaying the precious metal.  In addition some banks or financial institutions may charge a “holding”  or storage fee for holding your gold in their storage facilities.  Of course there are charges to be incurred by the institution whether it be property , maintenance and record keeping and of course security.  The storage fees can be a lump sum or they can be calculated on value and valuations – which of course are liquid and may change greatly over time , financial cycles and crisis.

If you do have gold bullion stored by a bank or broker, make sure that it is in a totally “non-fungible” storage program. This means that your gold is not combined in any manner with the assets of others, but rather held separately and indeed labeled and marked specifically with your name and identification.  Under such an arrangement you have legal title of the gold , and it cannot be considered part of the assets of the bank or dealer, in which form it could be tied up by creditors in the case of liquidation of the financial institution.
